There are three ways to treat dust allergy. They are: • Dust mite avoidance • Prescription medications • Allergy shots (immunotherapy)
Medications and immunotherapy can be done only under a thorough control of your doctor, whereas to keep your house neat and clean you don’t need a prescription. Dust avoidance does not treat, but it works best to relieve symptoms and to prevent the disease.
Here we provide ways how to avoid dust in different rooms. Keep in mind that the more attention you pay to your home environment, the fewer allergic symptoms you will experience.
Bedroom
o Try to keep the clothes away from the bedroom. They collect the dust from all the places you visit during a day. It is good to keep them in the special room – the closest, but if you don’t have the closet keep them in the drawers and don’t forget to keep them closed. o Keep the pets away from the bedroom. o Don’t have the stuffed animals in your bedroom; you should have only the washable ones. o All kinds of waxes that prevent dust from the scattering during the cleaning are very efficient. o Always damp your mop or use the vacuum cleaner rather than a broom as they don’t scatter dust. o Your favourite things – decorative pillows, toys, pictures, vases, knickknacks etc – are terrific dust collectors. Have as few as possible of them in your bedroom or clean and wash them regularly.
Surfaces
The basic tips how to control the rate of dust on your surfaces are the following:
o Regular thorough cleaning is vital in the places where there are people who suffer from allergies. Bedroom is the place that needs the most efficient cleaning. Ideally, someone other than the dust-sensitive person should clean, if this is not possible wear a mask (not to inhale the dust) and always use a damp cloth and all kinds of waxes to prevent dust scattering.
o There are special vacuum cleaner bags and central vacuum systems that may be useful for people who are sensitive to dust as they prevent dust from being inhaled. If you suffer from the severe dust allergy you may install any of these gadgets but they are not necessary for all the patients.
o Carpeting. Though cruel it may sound but you should remove all the carpeting as it is the place where the dust mites live and breed. It is extremely important to remove carpeting from the bedroom. Wood floors, seamless vinyl or linoleum floor coverings are best because they can be cleaned easily that’s why dust mites can’t live there. If under some reasons you can’t remove the carpeting you should use those with low pile. Also scatter and wash the carpets and rugs as often as it is only possible (once a fortnight is advisable).
