o Furniture. You are advised to keep furniture that is easy to clean and that doesn’t collect dust. Wooden, leather or plastic -covered sofas and chairs are the best in such situation. You should forget about upholstered furniture: it holds dust and is extremely difficult to clean. Open shelves should be replaced with the closed book cases and cabinets. Your favorite knickknacks are the real paradise for the dust mites and cockroaches. Hide them away from the open places and keep in the closed ones. Use washable curtains instead of heavy draperies which collect dust quickly and easily. Remember the simpler your furniture’s design is the less dust it collets, while the ornaments are dust collectors and out of fashion today. And also all the furniture must be washable and cleanable.

Chemical attack

If you tried all the mentioned ways and you still can’t get rid of the unpleasant symptoms in your house you may try to use chemical substances to kill the dust mites. There exist chemicals to kill dust mites or to inactivate their allergens. They vary in the prices, but price is not the only thing you should pay attention to choosing one. Chemicals can cause irritations in respiratory organs. You should be very careful using any chemical substances and you should also consult your doctor in case you might get an allergic reaction to chemicals. You also must always follow the instruction provided together with the chemical. Two main chemicals to be used for removing the dust mites are tannic acid and benzyl benzoate.

Tannic acid

It is effective if you want to remove the dust mite allergens and not the mites themselves. It is very easy in use you just need to spray it on the furniture, carpets, and curtains. As soon as it is sprayed it deactivates the allergen thus it is no more dangerous. But the effect doesn’t last for a long time because mites remain and allergen continues to build up. Thus you may need to apply the tannic acid rather often. Another disadvantage is that it may leave stains on some materials, that’s why before applying this acid on the expensive or valuable things choose the place which is not widely observed and try it there.

Benzyl benzoate

It is a more powerful chemical because it helps to remove not only the allergens but the dust mites themselves. It is sold as a moist powder which should be brushed into the carpets, left to dry and then it must be vacuumed from the carpet. After a couple of applications you will not have allergic reactions as you will not have the mites, so we can speak about the long-lasting effect. What you need to do is to apply benzyl benzoate once or twice a year to support the effect. Another advantage of this chemical is that it does not leave the stains on the carpets and it was approved by the Environmental Protection Agency as safe for home use.
