To understand what is dust let’s look at it under the microscope. House dust is an unpleasant conglomeration of dead skin particles; dead hair; fur and dander from pets and household pests, such as rodents; carcasses of dead insects; dust mites (and feces from these mites, as well as pets and pests), fibers from different types of fabrics; cotton lint, feathers, and other stuffing materials; bacteria; mold and fungus spores (especially in damp areas); food particles and other allergens peculiar to an individual home.

House dust is not the same as dust from outdoors which is essentially fine particles of dirt. It is a mixture of particulate matter that may contain multiple allergenic components. By far, the most significant allergenic component of house dust is waste products of the dust mite. All the things that penetrate into the house with our shoes and clothes; that are blown by the wind – pollens, dead plant matter are dust too. A speck of dust may contain fabric fibers, human skin particles, animal dander, mites, bacteria, parts of cockroaches, mold spores, food particles and other debris. Knowing this, it is very easy to understand why dust is allergic. You may be allergic to only of the mentioned particles and but after contact with dust it will trigger allergic reaction.

Clean and Dusty?

The following statement will ruin the general idea of the cleanness and order but even in the most clean houses dust can be found. Usual housekeeping procedures are usually not enough to make your house dust free. Thorough vacuuming and dusting can not terminate the dust mites that are present deep in carpets, pillows and mattresses. Vigorous cleaning methods can even put more dust into the air making symptoms worse. The more time you spend indoors, particular in the fall and winter, the greater your exposure to house dust allergens.
