Not only the peanuts but the peanut butters and oil are the problem too. Peanut and/or tree nut (e.g. walnut, almond and cashew) allergy affects about three million Americans, or 1.1% of the population. Unfortunately you can not substitute the peanut butter with other nut butters as they are usually produced on the same equipment what means it can cause allergic reactions.

Peanut allergy is a dangerous illness as it causes severe reactions and you are advised to have epinephrine at all times if you suffer from it.

This allergy can come at different types and it can be more or less dangerous. In some cases doctors advise to avoid all nuts as an extra precaution while in others you may be allowed to consume peanut oil.
Peanuts can be found in many foods and candies, especially chocolate candy. Check all labels carefully.

But not always the information is on the label. There are some hidden sources. They are:

o Artificial nuts can be peanuts that have been deflavored and reflavored with a nut, such as pecan or walnut. Mandelonas are peanuts soaked in almond flavoring.
o Arachis oil is peanut oil.
o African, Chinese, Indonesian, Mexican, Thai, and Vietnamese dishes often contain peanuts or are contaminated with peanuts during the preparation process. Additionally, foods sold in bakeries and ice cream shops are often in contact with peanuts.
o Many brands of sunflower seeds are produced on equipment shared with peanuts.
